Commissioning a custom Italian yacht is one of the most consequential purchases a person can make, and the most important decisions happen long before the boat ever hits water. From choosing the right shipyard and designer to navigating contracts and build timelines, every step matters. And in a market as nuanced as Italy’s, home to some of the most prestigious yacht builders in the world, the process can feel like a maze for even the most seasoned yacht owner.
That is where the Italian Yacht Group comes in. We work alongside you from the earliest concept through delivery, helping you make informed decisions at each stage of the build. Having managed dozens of fully custom yacht projects over 80 feet at leading Italian shipyards, we understand how these projects unfold in practice and how to keep them moving in the right direction from vision to launch.
Step 1: Start With the Brief, Not the Boat
Every Italian custom build with the Italian Yacht Group begins with a conversation about how you actually want to use your yacht. We sit down with you to sharpen the brief around range, lifestyle, aesthetics, and budget so every decision that follows is anchored to a clear vision.
Typical questions include:
- Do you need transatlantic range, or will you primarily cruise the Med and The Bahamas?
- Is a shallow draft essential for Bahamian sandbars or Hamptons bays?
- How many staterooms do you need for family, guests, crew, or charter?
- Are there must‑have features such as a beach club, toy garage, helipad, gym, Jacuzzi, or expedition capability?
- What is your preferred delivery window and budget envelope?
- Is future charter income, or building to a charter‑ready specification, important to you?
Once your vision is defined, we can determine whether a semi‑custom or semi‑production platform fits your needs, or whether a fully custom Italian yacht is the right path. Semi‑custom platforms use an existing hull and engineering package that you can personalize extensively, while a fully custom yacht is drawn around your brief from a blank sheet.
Step 2: Choose the Designer
An early, critical decision is choosing the right yacht designer and naval architect for your project. We help you select a design studio whose portfolio and philosophy align with your sense of style, performance expectations, and onboard lifestyle.
We will explore questions such as:
- Do you prefer a modern, sleek profile or a more timeless, classic line?
- Are you drawn to axe‑bow explorers or low‑slung, sporty superyachts?
- Do you envision vast, open‑air decks, or intimate lounges and salons with a more private feel?
Once the designer is appointed, we provide them with detailed technical specifications: overall length, beam, draft, range, gross tonnage, guest and crew count, and key performance targets. From there, the studio develops a general arrangement (GA) that brings your lifestyle requirements to life on paper. A yacht is a moving home, and every decision you make on paper will shape how it feels at sea. After your feedback and approval, that GA becomes the foundation we take to Italy’s top custom shipyards.

Step 3: Shop the GA to the Right Italian Shipyard
With a clear brief and GA in hand, we present your project to a curated shortlist of Italian and European builders. Depending on size and scope, we may introduce you to custom and superyacht yards such as Tankoa, Cantiere delle Marche, Rossinavi, CRN, Benetti, and other leaders in the 40‑meter‑plus segment.
When evaluating shipyards, we help you weigh factors like:
- Overall value at your specification and quality level
- Brand prestige and long‑term market reputation
- Technical capabilities, materials, and engineering depth
- Build‑slot availability and realistic delivery timing
- Resale and charter appeal in your size and category
Every yard has tradeoffs. None is the “right” choice for every project. Our job is to align the shipyard with your brief, budget, and risk tolerance.
Step 4: Scrutinize the Quote
Once a preferred yard is selected, the yard issues a detailed build quote and technical specification package. This is where deep experience is non‑negotiable.
Italian shipyards often incorporate allowances in their quotes, flexible budget lines for interior finishes, audio‑visual systems, tenders, and other options that will be finalized later. Without proper oversight, that can mean a quote that feels attractive on day one but quietly drifts upward as higher‑end selections are made during the build.
We perform a line‑by‑line scrub of:
- The yard’s technical specifications
- The commercial contract and build milestones
- Options lists, allowances, and provisional sums
You should never feel like you are discovering the real cost of your yacht halfway through the build. Our job is to make sure the technical spec and the financial picture match before you sign. Our goal is simple: no surprises, on the water or on the invoice.
Step 5: Set Up the Legal and Financial Plan
Running parallel to the contract negotiation, we help you assemble the rest of the team. That includes a maritime attorney to handle the ownership entity, delivery terms, bank refund guarantees, and registration strategy. If financing is part of the picture, we connect you with lenders who actively underwrite Italian custom builds.
Your maritime attorney will liaise directly with the shipyard’s counsel to structure ownership entities, secure bank refund guarantees, set delivery dates and milestones, and establish clear remedies if timing or specification issues arise. We remain closely involved, coordinating between legal, financial, and shipyard stakeholders so you can make decisions quickly and confidently. We act as your representative at the yard, not the other way around, so every conversation and decision starts from your interests.

Step 6: Put an Owner’s Representative on the Ground
Once contracts are signed and the build begins, your custom yacht starts transitioning from drawings to steel, aluminum, or composite. During this phase, typically two to three years for larger custom yachts, we appoint an experienced project manager to be your eyes and ears in the shipyard.
These project managers, often American or European with deep Italian shipyard experience, will:
- Visit the yard regularly throughout construction
- Monitor progress against schedule and budget
- Oversee quality control and specification compliance
- Flag decisions that require your input before they impact timing or cost
Your project manager filters the noise so you see only the decisions that truly require your input, instead of every internal question from the yard. Think of them as your on‑site captain for the build itself, keeping all parties aligned with the original brief and ensuring your yacht is being executed to the standard you expect.

Step 7: Assemble the Captain, Crew, and Onboard Life
Roughly six months before delivery, the project starts to feel less like construction and more like your future life on the water. This is when we help you secure the right captain and crew.
We assist with:
- Identifying qualified captains with the appropriate license, experience, and temperament
- Conducting interviews to ensure personality fit with you and your family
- Helping your captain recruit and structure a professional crew (engineers, stewards, chefs, and deckhands) appropriate to the yacht’s size and program
Alongside crew hiring, we work with your captain and interior team to outfit the yacht—from fire‑safety equipment, navigation and communication systems, and tenders, to linens, tableware, and the small details that make the yacht feel like yours from day one. We also advise on flag state, registration, insurance, and initial maintenance planning so your first season is smooth from a regulatory and operational perspective.

Step 8: Splash, Sea Trials, and the Closing Celebration
As launch approaches, you will choose a bottle of Champagne and watch your new yacht touch the water for the first time, a moment that never gets old. But even then, we are not finished.
After launch, your captain and the yard will run a period of sea trials and shakedown cruising, typically spanning three to four months. Systems are tested, fine-tuned, and, when needed, adjusted under real-world conditions to ensure everything is in the right place and working exactly as intended.
Only once you, your captain, and the IYG team are fully satisfied do we proceed to closing, often celebrated at the shipyard in Italy with the team that built your yacht. From there, you are free to set your first course, perhaps to the Amalfi Coast, the Balearics, or a summer in The Hamptons aboard a yacht that is unmistakably, undeniably yours.
Frequently Asked Questions
Full custom builds above 40 meters typically take between two and four years from contract signing to delivery. The exact window depends on the shipyard’s order book, design complexity, and level of customization. Yards like Cantiere delle Marche, Rossinavi, and Tankoa currently quote in this range.
The leading Italian yards working above 40 meters include Cantiere delle Marche, Rossinavi, Tankoa, Baglietto, CRN, Codecasa, ISA, and Admiral. Each has a distinct specialty, from explorer yachts to fast displacement to classic motor yachts.
A semi-custom yacht is built on an existing platform with personalization in interior finishes, layouts, and equipment. A full custom yacht is designed from a blank sheet, allowing complete control over hull form, layout, propulsion, and aesthetics. Semi-custom delivers faster and at lower cost. Full custom delivers a truly bespoke result.
Yes. A maritime attorney negotiates the build contract, structures the ownership entity, manages bank refund guarantees, and advises on flag registration and VAT strategy. IYG works with a network of experienced maritime counsel and connects clients accordingly.
After delivery, owners typically spend three to four months on shakedown cruises to validate systems, sort small issues, and ensure the boat performs as specified. The warranty period also engages at this stage. IYG remains engaged through this phase to help resolve any post-delivery questions with the yard.
