Planing vs. Semi-Displacement vs. Displacement Yacht Hulls

|

George Jousma explains the difference between yacht hull types and which might be best for you.

When it comes to their bottoms, not all yachts are created equally. And that’s very often the point. Various hull designs point toward very different usages for the yachts. There are three main types of hulls commonly seen. Those include planing hulls, which are typically reserved for smaller, faster boats that ride on top of the water, displacement hulls, which are often seen on larger yachts meant for long, fuel-efficient voyages, and semi-displacement hulls, which happily bridge the gap between the two.

George Jousma, co-founder of The Italian Yacht Group, brings vast experience selling boats of all sizes and offers unique insight into how a hull can affect an owner’s experience with their yacht. “It makes an enormous difference,” he says.

Outsiders might not realize just how different a yacht’s ride and functionality can be, but once you get into this world you understand that the particular hull your yacht rides on is incredibly important to your enjoyment of the yacht.

How Yacht Buyers Learned to Understand Hull Design

Jousma began selling Italian yachts in America over 30 years ago, and he can remember a time when consumers were not as savvy as they are today. “When I first started at Allied Marine, we were selling 115 Benetti Classics with a bulbous bow—then it grew into other sizes as well—and Americans didn’t know what it meant,” he says. “There was a lot of pushback because Americans wanted a 120-foot yacht that went 20 plus knots. They didn’t understand a boat that only did 15 knots. A big part of my job was making them understand the difference in fuel economy that a displacement hull offers. And also that if you put a Champagne glass on a table, it wouldn’t shake or move hardly at all.”

George Jousma is alluding to the legendary comfort that a displacement hull offers, along with outstanding fuel-economy performance. Because the boat sits fully in the water, with no part of the hull going up and “out of the hole” the ride is exceptionally smooth, as the yacht slices cleanly through the waves, instead of going over them. Displacement yachts are typically 1.5-3 times more fuel efficient than boats that get on plane as well. This means they have much longer ranges and also are significantly easier on the wallet. For many owners trading off a few knots is more than worth it. After all, who cares if your journey takes a little longer when you’re so incredibly comfortable?

The polar opposite of the displacement hull is the planing hull. Boats with this kind of bottom are usually smaller and faster than a typical motoryacht like IYG tends to sell. Nearly all sportfishes and center consoles have planing hulls, as do all the Vanquish models that IYG has paired with its clients. “They’re fast and exciting boats,” says Jousma. “They get up and on top of the waves and the ride is completely different. It becomes harder and harder to match this kind of bottom with larger and larger boats for a variety of reasons though.” Fuel burn is one of those reasons, planing hulls tend to consume fuel at a high rate, which limits the size of this type of yacht as costs can become prohibitive even for the most deep-pocketed client. However there are some larger models from builders like Sanlorenzo and Custom Line that fit in this category.

Semi-Displacement Hulls: Balancing Speed and Comfort

Occupying the space between planing hulls and displacement hulls are semi-displacement hulls, which first started appearing after World War II as engines got more powerful and construction materials got lighter. “Semi-displacement hulls work best on boats up to about 125 feet or so,” says Jousma. “They go faster than displacement hulls, and have a bow angle like a planing hull even if they really are not coming up out of the water.” Semi-displacement yachts of any size typically require both a large keel and a stabilizer system to minimize roll. Despite the keel, their drafts are usually favorable because the hull design requires a flatter aft section. Fuel burn numbers split the difference between displacement and planing hulls. In that way semi-displacement hulls offer a sweet compromise for yacht owners, creating yachts that are fast enough to outrun a storm without creating added operating-cost pressure at the pump.

One thing we see as we bring clients along on their yachting journey, is this feeling of ‘Oh, I have a small, fast center console, I’ll never get used to having a displacement boat, because it’s too slow, says Jousma.

But it’s our job to impress upon them just how much more comfortable some of these hulls are, and then let them make their own decision. Typically, by the time people come to us, they already know which kind of hull they want.
