Expedition Yachts: Exploring the World at the Height of Luxury

|

Expedition yachts offer their owners the chance to see parts of the globe many never will, and all of it at the height of luxury.

The Allure of Expedition Yachts

There is no more masculine sight, no more pure expression of unfettered freedom in the world of yachting than a big, brawny expedition yacht disappearing toward the horizon, its high-mounted bow pointed boldly toward parts unknown.

Why Expedition Yachts Are Having a Moment

The trend toward explorer yachts with their sturdy builds and eye-popping range numbers has gained steady steam over the past decade or more, but in recent years it has really taken off. One reason for this is the Great Wealth Transfer that is beginning to occur as the Baby Boomer generation dies off, funneling trillions of dollars of inheritances to yacht owners who are still energetic and vibrant 40 and 50 year olds. Couple that with new money flooding in from the tech sector, and yacht owners are younger than they have ever been before. And with this new blood reinvigorating the market, a yearning for something more than just bobbing around the Caribbean or the Med has taken hold.

“There’s a sense among some owners, especially the younger ones, that maybe the Med and Caribbean were mom and dad’s thing,” says Boomer Jousma.

“There’s kind of a been-there-done-that feeling in certain sectors of the market. And you couple that with a lot of these guys still being in great shape and looking for adventure, and it’s no wonder that they want boats that can take them to the South Pacific, take them to the Northwest Passage, heck even take them all the way down to Antarctica in some cases.”

Rossinavi Berserk: An Expedition Yacht Built to Roam

One prime example of what these younger yacht owners are looking for is the Rossinavi Berserk which the team at The Italian Yacht Group is overseeing during her build process and which will be delivered in the summer of 2026. Berserk derives its name from a set of fearless ancient Norse warriors known as berserkers who were effectively Viking Navy Seals. The yacht will be built to be just as fearless in her exploits. The 47-meter yacht will have a strong steel hull and transAtlantic range. She also has reliable twin 1,900-horsepower Caterpillar engines that can be easily serviced in many ports of call. A massive aft deck holds both a 21-foot ski boat and a 37-foot Axopar which can ferry guests out on scuba and fishing adventures.

But the dual-nature of any proper explorer yacht demands that adventure not be the only calling card of the boat. It also needs to be exceptionally luxurious on the inside. To that end The Touch Studio has been employed to do interiors, and they won’t disappoint. The Dutch firm does both yachts and residences and is known for forward-thinking, modern design that doesn’t sacrifice any bit of comfort. Berserk will have five staterooms and large and open entertaining areas that exhibit exceptional levels of fit and finish.

“We are really enjoying heading up the build process on Berserk,” says Jousma.

“Rossinavi brings to the table some of the highest quality construction you’ll find not just in Italy, but nearly anywhere on Earth. And we think that the partnerships we have formed with the builder and designer are going to create a yacht that will make waves in more ways than one wherever she goes. This is a very special project that will make her owners very, very happy.”

Megaprojects and Scale: The World’s Largest Expedition Yacht

In many ways Berserk is the quintessential explorer yacht, though she is far from the only one. At the upper reaches of the industry, explorer yachts have become incredibly en vogue over the past decade. In fact, what will eventually become the world’s largest yacht, REV Ocean, is an explorer yacht under build at the Vard shipyard in Norway. The 639-footer will have a gross tonnage of 19,235—mind-blowing numbers by anyone’s standards. With expected transPacific range the yacht (which is also part research vessel) will trot the globe not only at its owner’s pleasure, but also for the good of the scientific world.

Who Builds the Best Expedition Yachts

Though REV Ocean is certainly an anomalous project there are builders that specialize in explorer yachts. Perhaps the best known of these is Holland’s Damen Yachts, whose Xplorer series offers 60-, 80-, and 105-meter offerings. These yachts match vaunted Dutch build quality with a nearly military aesthetic and interior comforts that are equal to any motoryacht’s. In Southern Europe, the explorer-yacht segment is largely dominated by Ancona’s Cantiere delle Marche (CDM). That yard—with which IYG has deep contacts—has separated itself from the pack with the kind of sturdy, seaworthy builds that you must absolutely demand in a yacht of this type. Though CdM does not sacrifice any of the style and design that Italian vessels are known for.
