Sanlorenzo SX Series: Crossover Luxury with Explorer Spirit

|

Sanlorenzo’s popular SX series merges the luxury of a motoryacht with the adventurous appeal of an expedition yacht.

Why the Sanlorenzo SX Series Works

Sometimes all you need is the right mix to create magic. This simple concept was almost surely at the forefront of the good people at Sanlorenzo’s minds when they developed the SX series. The SX series was conceived of as a hybrid between the high luxury offered by traditional Italian motoryachts, and the high adventure that comes part and parcel with the increasingly popular expedition-type vessels that have been exploring the seven seas as of late. To that end, all of the SX models that Sanlorenzo offers have the flybridge layouts of traditional yachts blended with the functionality and masculine aesthetics of explorers.

The SX yachts also have an open-transom beach club that fits in with larger trends in yachting. While it may seem counterintuitive to have an open transom on an explorer, one must take into account the owners who would likely be enticed by an SX. As yacht buyers skew younger and younger thanks to an influx of tech money and the Great Wealth Transfer from baby boomers to their children, owners want to explore new destinations beyond the Med and the Caribbean, and they also demand more outside space for fun in the sun. Thus the open transom and large beach club make sense, especially as they are designed and built to highly stringent standards so the yacht’s seaworthiness is never compromised.

The SX models also stand out for how on-trend their designs are. Foldout terraces are par for the course on these boats, as are expansive sliding windows that help blend one living space with the next, creating open and airy places to relax while at sea.

“There’s so much to like with the SX series,” says Boomer Jousma.

It really takes the best of both worlds, meshing real-deal luxury with the wide-open spaces that have become so popular in recent years, while also maintaining that rugged, expedition vibe that so many people have fallen in love with. These boats simply check a lot of boxes for a lot of folks. And the nice part is there is a full lineup to meet your needs at whatever size you like.

Design DNA of the Sanlorenzo SX Series

The SX series includes the SX76, SX88, SX100, SX112, and the SX120. All of them have lines penned by the inimitable Bernardo Zuccon of Zuccon International Project, and inviting interiors done by the one-and-only Pierro Lissoni. The fact that each model has the same designers helps Sanlorenzo ensure a consistent design language across the lineup—a boon for owners looking to grow with their yachts.

The first SX model to debut was the SX88 which wow’d crowds at the Cannes Yachting Festival back in 2017. Journalists and potential owners fawned over that yacht’s elegant yet functional design. The 88’s significant successes very much helped set the stage for its sisterships that would splash in the ensuing years.

“One of the reasons that this series has been such a success for Sanlorenzo is for sure the emphasis they put on design, both in terms of interiors and exteriors, as well as the fact that all of the yachts are in conversation with each other, design-wise,” says Jousma. ‘When you look at one of them, you can tell it belongs with the others. And I think that was a very smart move by Sanlorenzo, creating its own little SX team, if you will.”

The IPS Difference on the SX Series

Another thing that makes the SX line stand out is its liberal use of Volvo Penta IPS pods. These compact and efficient propulsion units offer multiple benefits that help make the SX line worthy of your consideration. For one, since they are smaller than traditional engines, they create more onboard space for entertaining and sleeping. The pods are also designed to be more efficient than straight shafts, to the tune of up to 30 percent in some cases. The increase in range and the decrease in pain at the pump is highly evident in this regard. Thirdly, from the captain’s perspective (or the intrepid owner-operator’s) the pods are highly maneuverable both at speed and while docking. The joystick controls make sliding these yachts in and out of tight spaces a breeze.

“The choice to go completely with IPS drives on this line was a bold one, but I think it works really well,” says Jousma.

The owners I have spoken to who have these boats love the fuel efficiency of course, but what also really stands out to me is the maneuverability, which beats most anything that competes with the SXs. And it’s always nice to have the extra room onboard, too.

Big Debut at Cannes: The Sanlorenzo SX120

The flagship of the SX line is about to debut at the 2025 Cannes Yachting Festival, running next week. The yacht stands out for being particularly large for having IPS propulsion. The full-beam beach club with fold-out terraces as well as the retractable glass pool on the main deck (hidden beneath a sunpad) will surely grab eyeballs as well.
